Right around 172,000 miles, the Jasper replacement AOD began leaking and exhibiting signs of imminent death. The Jasper had served me well with over 100,000 miles of immature driving and 1-2-1 race shifts. A friend had an inexpensive rebuilt AOD available and I picked up a TCI 3000 stall "Street Fighter" torque converter. Once again I traveled to Bethel Delaware to my pal Brian's house for grueling Tranny surgery.........
Ready to be installed in the Mustang is the rebuilt Ford AOD, the TCI converter, the Energy Suspension transmission mount, the filter, gaskets and aluminum driveshaft.
The car was raised about 24 inches on truck jack stands and the exhaust unbolted. All coolant lines, linkage and wiring were disconnected. The transmision was gently lowered on to the jack...
The torque converter was drained and the exhaust was unbolted...
With the old transmission out, I got to see my flex plate for the first time...
Also with the old transmission out, it was cool to see the back of my engine. Luckily we had planned to replace the rear main seal..
This is what we found when we opened the rebuilt AOD. We removed the gasket material from the pan and installed a fresh filter.
A quick converter comparison...
The TCI converter is placed in it's new home...
The factory transmission mount looked more like a cube of seaweed then an automotive part. Luckily Brian had a new Energy Suspension piece on hand.
Another Old versus New comparison
Finally, after a long day, everything was bolted up....
It was 10 PM and time to add fluid, go for a ride and drink the beer....
